The Rules

Rules Collectors Have to Follow

Debt collectors don't get to do whatever it takes to get paid. Federal law puts real limits on their contact with you — here are a few examples.

Calling Hours
No calls before 8am or after 9pm your time.
Call Frequency
No more than 7 calls about the same debt in any 7-day period.
Written Stop Requests
Once you ask in writing, most further contact has to stop.
Third-Party Contact
With narrow exceptions, they can't discuss your debt with your family, friends, or employer.
False Threats
They can't threaten arrest, jail, or a lawsuit that never happens.
Attorney Representation
Once they know you have an attorney, they're supposed to go through your attorney instead of you.
